The defeat of the Taipings and persistent interethnic warfare with Cantonese speakers forced tens of thousands of both dialect groups to flee abroad. Cantonese and Hakka brotherhoods found themselves competing for tin deposits in the Malayan jungle, where they went right on fighting each other.
