Racial classification was not part of the old Siamese system. The idea that one was indelibly “Chinese” by race was not even conceived until its twentieth-century appearance as part of a truculent ethnonationalism.47 Here Siam differed from the colonial world, which (no doubt because Europeans brought racial ideas with them) insisted on clear divisions among ethnic groups.
