In the anarchic conditions following the Opium War, ethnic and lineage feuding yielded prisoners who could be sold to coolie brokers. Sometimes poverty and desperation even led villagers to sell their own kinsmen and neighbors into bondage. Victims were lured or hauled to seaports, where they were locked into the prisonlike “barracoons” to await shipment abroad.
