Chinese emigration to the settler societies proceeded in tandem with European emigration to these same venues. The Chinese in these societies, during the period of mass migration, were never free from the hostility of white working-class immigrants, who saw them as formidable competitors who threatened to take jobs from them by working harder for less money.
