In those environments, the nationalist agenda served various needs: to create a self-image or group image that could enhance Chinese status and security, to protect their economic position, and to coalesce around common threats regardless of regional and dialect divisions. Finally, nationalist movements were arenas for political competition and social mobility within the Chinese community.
