Associating China with the situation of migrants abroad, drawing emotional support from the struggles of homeland reformers and revolutionaries, was probably common enough: a strong, progressive China could be powerfully suggestive to Chinese abroad who felt oppressed and despised. Public support for reform in China swept through American Chinese communities.
