The multiple-nationality practice was consistent with the “business is business” ethos of overseas Chinese merchants. This was not easily to be classed as treason: formal nationality (as distinct from affinity group) was considered not an indelible mark of one’s identity but rather a flexible attribute that probably carried little or no moral weight for most people.
