Anti-Chinese sentiment in Thailand had been inflamed in 1909 by a Chinese strike to protest new government tax policies. King Rama VI had returned from his English education brimming with fashionable European anti-Semitic clichés that seemed cognate with stereotypes of the Chinese minority in his own society. The young king found the Chinese a convenient foil for his own nationalistic animus.
